Kitchen design: the finishing touches

Kitchen design: the finishing touches
In designing a kitchen, the main items one initially focuses on are the cabinetry and counter top style or finish. However, what about the finer details? Will your cupboards have handles or knobs? How about your backsplash or wall tiles? What about your wall colour, faucet style or your light fixture?

Kitchen design: the finishing touches

To be perfectly honest, the importance of style for all of these items is pretty irrelevant when it comes to function. These details are important but they often go unrecognized as an individual piece. However, these accessories and finishes play an important part in the overall aesthetic of the kitchen (or any other room for that matter).

There are literally thousands upon thousands of different handles and knob styles to choose from – from chrome and stainless steel to polished brass and wrought iron. A baseline to work from usually is; if you have modern or contemporary cabinets rather opt to go for handles than knobs and vice versa with a more traditional country style kitchen. Knobs often give a kitchen a more cosy and vintage feel, whereas long bar handles emphasise the clean lines in a modern kitchen.

When it comes to kitchens wall colours; white, grey, blue, red, yellow, and green really shine. Each of these shades can do something different for the room. White can really energize a room. It feels fresh and clean, and you can also have more fun with brighter colours or designs for the countertops and backsplash. Different shades of greys pair beautifully with a wide array of other colours and are the perfect base to build upon in a kitchen. Red is incredibly versatile and there are multiple shades that would really pop in a kitchen.

The backsplash materials you choose should combine functionality and aesthetics. Choose a finish that is suitable for the style of your kitchen – don’t use a classical tile with an ultra-modern high gloss kitchen, rather go for glass splash-backs. Some of the most popular splash-back materials include granite; marble; quartz; stainless steel or copper; wood or veneer; cork; glass and the traditionally ceramic tiles.

Think downlights, pendant light and under-cabinet lights. Adding stainless steel pendant light over your kitchen island can give a more industrial look to your kitchen. Or multi-coloured rope lights underneath your cabinetry for a modern feel.

If you are just thinking of giving your exciting kitchen a face lift or doing an entire kitchen renovation and are looking for a place in your kitchen to add your own personal style; the finishing touches are the place to do it!
