A swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child age 4 and under. Yet still, drownings occur in domestic pools across South Africa on a daily basis. Tragic losses that could have been prevented with the right level of pool safety combined with adult supervision.
-Never leave a child unsupervised near water. Even small inflatable paddling pols, jacuzzis and fishponds pose a great danger.
-Make sure babysitters understand all the potential hazards of water and the need for constant supervision.
-Pools must be fenced and should have self closing gates with safety latches placed out of reach of children.
-Children can still drown even if they know how to swim.
-Never use flotation devices ad a substitute for supervision.
-Never use a pol with its cover partially in place, since children may become entrapped under it.
-Have a cellphone with you when supervising children at the pool and keep emergency numbers stored for a quick call.
-Learn CPR ( cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
-Many parents teach their children to swim as a social skill and see it as a fun pastime.
South Africa parents need to shift their thinking and view swimming as a life survival skill, and NOT a social pastime.
-REMEMBER... Children tend to make a noise in the pool. If they are quiet, go and check on them immediately.
