Post 55 Build it Journey

Blog Post 55

Well today was quite a day. First let me say that I did go out last night and gaze or stare at the stars for a long time. It truly was beautiful and always makes you feel small and safe in equal measures. It also makes you wonder about things  - in your own life and also about things bigger than life. It was a very special moment and brought me closer to my God which is always good. I do wish I could be a better person.

The morning dawned bright and sunny and soon developed into for me was the hottest day of the year. There is no explaining the heat in this part of the country and it is only the beginning of November. I can’t even imagine what it must be like here in January and February. The people are all so friendly though so there must be a correlation between sunshine, heat and having a friendly disposition. I could think of some people that need to get dumped here in the Northern Cape for a summer season smiley

A huge attraction today was the scenery. I have never seen scenery quite like it. Massively flay, dry and arid and then with moonscape outcrops of these huge massive rocky outcrops and buttresses of rock. It’s hard to explain because they were not mountains and they were not hills. It was all so impressive – and seriously beautiful.

Radio and cell phone signal disappeared so I got out my ipad and speaker and was soon cranking up some good tunes. Listening to Chicane and Van Morrison whilst driving through that landscape is something I don’t think I will forget as long as I live.

I arrived in Upington after driving through some of South Africa’s much loved landmarks. Pofadder and Kakamas were two of them. Pofadder with all it’s conjuring of romance has to be the most desolate and dusty place I have ever seen. I also drove through a little settlement  - the name of which now escapes me – which as far as I could see had only one going commercial concern and the sign said ‘Drankwinkel’. I imagine they did not sell energy drinks there.

In Upington I met with the most friendly and engaging Mano Williams. What a nice person. He was very patient as we had some initial challenges but were soon in and he was amazed to see all the quote and contact requests awaiting him. After going through the rest of his listing I was on my way again to Postmansburg where I will spend the night and see the local Postmansburg Build It in the morning. In the last two days I have driven 1,380 kms on very straight roads. Thank heavens for the scenery!

Oh and as you will see in the picture of the day another amazing site of the day was the birds’ nests that they have made in the telephone poles. They are absolutely huge and some of them have even pulled down telephone poles that lie at 45 degree angles. I am supposing they are cool in summer and warm in winter. Nature truly is an amazing thing.
